International Week of Deaf People

Press Release

International Week of Deaf People (IWDP) is celebrated every year in the last full week of September to honour deaf culture, promote sign language and advocate for the rights of Deaf people. The week highlights that sign language is a human right and essential for full participation in society. Activities include workshops, cultural events, awareness campaigns and community events.

In Ireland, the Irish Deaf Society (IDS) celebrates IWDP alongside Irish Sign Language Awareness Week (22–28 September 2025), with daily themes focusing on education, accessibility, health, employment, and culture.

Today marks the start of International Week of Deaf People 2025. Our Chairperson opened the week with a powerful message: “No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights.”

This year’s theme reminds us that sign language is not optional — it is a basic human right – More information on the themes. Join us as we celebrate Deaf culture, language and leadership throughout the week.
