House of the Oireachtas ISL Glossary
The Irish Sign Language (ISL) Glossary of Parliamentary Terms is an initiative by the Houses of the Oireachtas to enhance accessibility for the Deaf community in Ireland. Launched in December 2023, coinciding with National Irish Sign Language Day, the glossary comprises approximately 80 terms specific to parliamentary proceedings and activities.
This glossary includes both existing signs used within the Deaf community and newly developed signs to accurately represent parliamentary concepts. Its development reflects a commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring that the Deaf community has the same access to Ireland’s Parliament as everyone else.
The ISL glossary has been recognised as world-class at Civil Service awards, highlighting its significance in promoting inclusivity within governmental institutions.
