ISL Interpretation for RTÉ Home School Hub

17th April 2020

RTÉ will broadcast an Irish Sign Language (ISL) version of the popular primary school series RTÉ Home School Hub every weekday. Starting today (Thursday 16 April) at 1pm on RTÉ2, the episodes will also be available on RTÉ Player.

ISL interpretation for RTÉ Home School Hub will be provided by Daniel Crean and Romy O’Callaghan – Daniel will be familiar to deaf viewers from his popular interpreting of the Late Late Toy Show.

Kevin Burns, Head of RTÉ Access says: “We’re delighted to offer this important addition to the daytime schedule. The RTÉ Home School Hub has proven hugely popular. It covers a wide range of subjects, classes and ages in an accessible, entertaining and really engaging way. We’re really grateful for the expert advice and support our interpreters received from ISL professionals, who use ISL, Elaine Grehan, Senan Dunne, Audrey Conama and Mark McCaffrey.”

Elaine Grehan, Advocacy Manager, Irish Deaf Society, says: “Deaf children, and their parents and teachers, will be delighted to see Irish Sign Language educational resources on TV. Deaf children do not have access to the same resources as hearing children do and this news is very welcome.”

John Sherwin, CEO Irish Deaf Society, says: “RTÉ has taken a very positive step to include Deaf children and their parents in programming during daytime television. The Access and Learning team in RTÉ are demonstrating their support for the Deaf community and access to educational content.”

To celebrate the launch of RTÉ Home School Hub in ISL, RTÉ produced an ISL version of Sinéad Burke’s contribution to yesterday’s Home School Hub, where she talks about the importance of following your dreams.
